Three-paycheck months in 2027

Paid every two weeks? Most months bring two paychecks, but two or three months a year bring a third. Which months that is in 2027 depends on one date: your first payday of the year.

Quick answer for 2027

It depends on your first payday of the year, not only on the weekday. Two people who are both paid every other Friday can get their third paycheck in different months, because their Fridays alternate. If you're paid on Fridays:

Paid on Fridays in 2027?

  • Every other Friday, first payday Jan 1 January, July and December 27 paydays in 2027
  • Every other Friday, first payday Jan 8 April and October 26 paydays in 2027
  • Every Friday (weekly) January, April, July, October and December five paydays in each of these months · 53 in 2027

For any other weekday, use the table below or enter one payday in the free three-paycheck months calculator. It covers 2026, 2027 and 2028, for pay every two weeks and every week. If you budget by paycheck, our Paycheck Budget Planner marks these months in your plan.

Three-paycheck months in 2027 by payday

With biweekly pay, every weekday has two possible schedules – one for each of the two alternating weeks. To find yours:

  1. Find the weekday you're paid on.
  2. Look up your first payday in January 2027. Don't know it yet? Count back from any payday you know in steps of two weeks. If it falls between Jan 1 and Jan 7, use the first column; between Jan 8 and Jan 14, use the second.
  3. Paid every week? Use the last column. It shows the months with five paydays instead of four.

A note in a cell means a bank holiday could move one of those paychecks into a different month. Why that happens is explained further down.

2028 and the rest of 2026

2028

2028 is a leap year and starts on a Saturday. For paydays from Monday to Friday that means no biweekly schedule reaches 27 paydays in 2028, and weekly pay stays at 52. One detail stands out: Tuesday paydays that start on Jan 4 get three paychecks in February – Feb 1, Feb 15 and Feb 29.

2026

For 2026, only the last months of the year still lie ahead. If you're paid every other Friday and your first 2026 payday was Jan 9, October 2026 brings a third paycheck: Oct 2, Oct 16 and Oct 30.

Why some years have 27 paydays

Paying every two weeks is common in the U.S.: in February 2023, 43% of private business establishments used a biweekly pay period, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The schedule doesn't fit the calendar exactly, though.

Twenty-six paydays, 14 days apart, cover 364 days. A year has 365 days, or 366 in a leap year. So your paydays drift: each year, your first payday in January comes one day earlier – two days earlier when a February 29 falls in between. Once the first payday lands on Jan 1 (or on Jan 2 in a leap year), the year has room for a 27th payday at the very end of December.

For any one schedule this happens roughly every 11 years, according to the payroll advisers at CBIZ. In 2027 it hits the Friday schedule that starts on Jan 1: 2027 begins and ends on a Friday, so that schedule has 27 paydays, the last one on Dec 31, 2027.

Weekly pay works the same way. Fifty-two weeks are 364 days, so a weekly schedule has 53 paydays when the year starts on your payday – or, in a leap year, when it starts on your payday or the day before. In 2027 that's Fridays; in 2026 it was Thursdays.

If you're salaried, a 27th payday doesn't automatically mean more pay for the year. Some employers divide the annual salary by 27 in those years, so each check is a little smaller; others keep the usual amount and pay a 27th check (CBIZ). Your payroll team or HR can tell you which way yours works.

Holidays and weekends can move a payday

The dates in this guide and in the calculator are calendar dates. Real deposits can shift. Banks don't process direct deposits on Federal Reserve holidays. If a payday falls on one, the money generally arrives the next business day – unless your employer runs payroll early (Experian).

That matters most at the edge of a month. Friday, Jan 1, 2027 is New Year's Day – and a payday on the Friday schedule above. Some employers will pay on Thursday, Dec 31, 2026 instead (CBIZ). If yours does:

  • December 2026 gets a third paycheck, and 2026 counts 27 paydays.
  • January 2027 has only two paychecks. July and December 2027 still have three, and 2027 counts 26.

Monday paydays can move the other way. Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 31, 2027. If your employer pays the next business day, that paycheck lands on Tuesday, Jun 1.

Weekends rarely matter for biweekly or weekly pay, because your payday stays on the same weekday. They matter more for pay on fixed dates, such as the 15th and the last day of the month.

To see what applies to you, check your pay stub or your employer's payroll calendar, or ask HR. The calculator marks every payday that falls on a Federal Reserve holiday and shows where it would land if paid a business day early or late. It doesn't move any dates on its own.

Find your own months

The three-paycheck months calculator needs three answers:

  1. How often you're paid – every 2 weeks or every week.
  2. One payday you know – past or upcoming, for example the date on your last pay stub.
  3. The year – 2026, 2027 or 2028.

It counts forward and back in steps of 14 (or 7) days, lists every payday of that year, marks the months with three (or five) paydays and points out holiday paydays. It runs in your browser; nothing you type is stored or sent.

What people do with a third paycheck

In a normal 26-payday year, a third paycheck isn't extra income. It's your regular pay – the calendar simply puts three paydays into one month. It only feels extra because a monthly budget built on two paychecks doesn't count on it.

Here are common ways people plan for that money. None of them is right for everyone, and this guide isn't financial advice.

  • Get ahead on next month's bills. Pay a bill that's due right after the month ends, so it doesn't have to come out of the next paycheck.
  • Cover a yearly or irregular bill – car insurance, a registration fee, a subscription renewal or holiday gifts.
  • Add to a savings goal, such as an emergency fund or a trip.
  • Make an extra debt payment above the minimum.
  • Keep it as a buffer in checking for months when bills run higher.
  • Spend part of it on something planned – decided in advance, not on the day it arrives.

Whichever you pick, many people find it easier to decide before the paycheck arrives and to write the decision into their plan. In a 27-payday year, check first how your employer splits your salary (see above).

Plan it in a paycheck budget

A monthly budget hides three-paycheck months; a budget by paycheck shows them. Our Paycheck Budget Planner is built around paydays. You set your pay schedule once – weekly, every 2 weeks, every 4 weeks, twice a month or monthly, for up to 4 incomes – and the web app lists every payday with what that paycheck covers and what's left until the next one. Extra-paycheck months are flagged, so a third paycheck shows up in your plan before it arrives.

Plan every payday: five pay schedules, up to 4 incomes, and months with an extra paycheck are flagged.
Every payday in one list – the third paycheck in January 2026 is tagged “Extra paycheck”. Sample data.
Year view: the dashboard names the months with an extra paycheck. Sample data.

It's a one-time download on Etsy: an offline web app that needs no account, plus a separate Google Sheets™ version that needs a free Google account. The two don't sync. The planner works only with what you enter – it doesn't connect to your bank. More templates for paycheck and monthly budgets are on our budget spreadsheets page.

Questions

Which months have three paychecks in 2027?

It depends on your first payday of 2027. Paid every other Friday starting Jan 1: January, July and December. Starting Jan 8: April and October. For other weekdays, see the 2027 table or use the calculator.

Are there 27 pay periods in 2027?

Only on biweekly schedules with a payday on Friday, Jan 1, 2027. Those have 27 paydays in 2027, the last one on Dec 31. If your employer moves the Jan 1 payday to Dec 31, 2026, it counts toward 2026 instead, and 2027 has 26. Every other biweekly schedule has 26 paydays in 2027.

Is a third paycheck extra money?

Not in a normal year. You still get 26 paychecks; two months simply contain three of them. In a 27-payday year it depends on whether your employer divides your salary by 26 or by 27.

What about pay every 4 weeks or twice a month?

Every 4 weeks usually means 13 paydays a year, so one month has two. Twice a month (semimonthly) means 24 paydays, two in every month – although a payday moved for a weekend or holiday can occasionally land in the month before. Monthly pay means 12 paydays. The calculator covers weekly and every-two-weeks pay.

Does the calculator save my dates?

No. It runs in your browser and doesn't store or send anything you type. Close the page and the dates are gone.
